Do you have your story idea yet?

Is anyone locked onto the story idea for this year's NaNoWriMo? I've got a few I'm toying with, I've run into the problem of keeping the story going in the past so I know how important it is to have something which won't run out of steam too quickly.

Three ideas I've got as possibles:
1. Man finding out he's a werewolf, it turns out that the condition is very more like a split-personality rather than mindless transformation.

2. An X-File'ish idea set during the Victorian age.

3. Fantasy story set in a sort of animal-centric world (a less kidsy Lion King world), magic is almost unknown but the birth of an almost unicorn like creature with magic abilities is seen as possibly throwing the world into war.

I know they're not really that well sketched out, I may instead jump on an idea or two I'd attempted in previous years but barely even started writing due to bad timing of November in those years.

I beg of you, if you're doing anything psychological to PLEASE do your research. I'm not sure if I can stand another depressive leaping over a building in a rage, or another freakin' Sybil. Real-life crazy people can be pretty sensitive about that sort of thing. ;-]

I'm planning to write the sequel to the story I wrote last year for NaNoWriMo, so I'd say I'm pretty locked in. It's a modern fantasy and follows the same characters and a few new ones from last year's story.

For what my opinion is worth, I am really digging on the second idea you listed there. I'm a table-top gamer and just the suggestion gives me idea for some pretty interesting gaming sessions. The first idea sounds a bit like 'Jekyll and Hyde', and the third is interesting, but neither piques my interest as much as the second one.

Also, tenoko1, love the icon.

I was idealess for quite a long time, but I figured I would go with a hopefully light-hearted space romp using a setting/characters I created for an RPG. Of course, every time I play with plot ideas, they seem much more dark than I initially intended. LOL

If we're voting on your ideas, I say go with #3. It seems to have the most meat to it.

I'm going to use NaNo to speed up on my collection of stories about parallel worlds to this one. Every story is about 8000 words so I could pretty much finish it off if NaNo works out for me.

My Idea
Historical fiction, set in Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the reign of Gediminas. When the Papal court was in Avignon France rather than Rome the Grand Duke sent the Pope a letter asking for baptism. Lithuania was the last pagan nation in Europe. The Pope sent envoys to Lithuania in 1324 but discovered much more going on than making Europe completely Christian.

Oh, and there will be romance between a Lithuanian girl and one of the French knights who travels with the envoy.

I like the werewolf idea-- I work at a library and a patron asked me about teen vampire/werewolf books and I was drawing a blank because recent novels and series have left much to be desired. I wouldn't mind something with a fresh take like that :)

I have been locked into my story idea for two years. This year I'm writing the second book in my trilogy of fantasy books (book 3 was written for NaNo 2010, book 1 was last year's). My main character is now 18, grieving the death of his grandfather/guardian and is going to run into an old enemy on top of that.

i'm going to be a rebel this year and continue last year's novel. i've barely touched the story since last november and there's easily another 50k plus to go. i've been too distracted (pleasantly so) crafting so far this year. this is also my first year as a coML for our region, so i'm really hoping the four plus write-ins we have planned each week will help me reach 50k and keep me from setting a bad example for our wrimos.

I think your number two is a winner too.

I skipped Nano last year, so I will probably go back to the one I started the year before that and finish it.

This year is just going by way too fast for me but I am doing my best to hang on. I like your ideas. They seem work-able. I prefer not to plan out any of my stories because that usually turns me off right away. I usually just type it all out spontaneously. :-)

I do the same thing. I have tried planning it all out and usually my characters have different ideas about what should happen lol. Or I try to conform them to my plan and it just doesn't work out so I throw it all away!

I think I'm going rebel this year and using NaNo to finish a story I've been putting off for too long. I do have another plot bunny that's gnawing at my heels, but I'm trying hard to avoid it so I can finish the WIP first!

I don't think I'm doing it this year. I am turning in my thesis for grad school on November 5th. After that, I will at most write one shot fanfiction or poems if I feel the need for that kind of outlet. Mostly I will be seeing my friends, whom I have ignored so much. I will also be job hunting. Good luck to everyone participating!

What is it with academic writing that is so stifling that once you done you have all this creative talent exploding out of you at that moment of turn in! Congrats on finishing your thesis (Are we talking Master's or Doctoral? I'm working on my Doctorate at the moment.) Good luck on the job hunting!

3 sounds most like the one I'd most want to read.

I'm not sure if I can do a NaNO, I had a lot of trouble getting through Camp NaNo and my novel was awful. I have a vague idea for a plot, though. it involves a computer RPG style fantasy world and is from the perspective of a high-end but not quite final boss in a massive endgame dungeon like Darm Tower. he is a haunted suit of armour and doesn't remember much of his life before he died and was bound into the armour. by the end of the book you found out he was a player character and then he underwent the process voluntarily because he was disillusioned and just wanted some peace and quiet, or something.

I've been bouncing back and forth between a couple ideas I have:

1) In a futuristic world, you can go back up to 5 times to observe memories that you've had. What happens when the powers that be are deleting the bad memories of people?

2) Three brothers go on a wild adventure. Based on the movie Willow and RPGs [and D&D]. One of the brothers, a thief, unwittingly steals an amulet from a sorceress, that ends up turning him into a female. He[she?] has to find a possibly mythical wizard to turn him/her back. Goes from being a sexist prick into a decent human being due to the change. Possibly thought about having one of the affects of the amulet makes him/her think about his/her brother in a way that he/she shouldn't

I think I've got my idea for this year, and I'm actually going to spend time PLANNING this year, which is a first to me. Last few years I've ended up just floundering over a bunch of nothing in my story because I think that 50,000 is so huge, but it's really not.

My idea kind of plays off a lot of things that have been in my head lately, and I'm hoping it's not too similar to anything that's been done before:

Fantasy story in a world where magic used to be what ran the world, only it's a dwindling resource, much like oil is in our world today. Although magic used to be free and rampant, it is now used only by those rich enough to afford it, the upper class, generally those who are employed by the government. The government is poisoning the water and food in certain areas (the 'poor' areas) so that they are forced to continue to buy magic to survive, and thus fund the government. Government is run by what started as a president-like position (limited term) but has become more of a dictator.

I plan to tell the story of those fighting against the government, fighting for getting rid of magic. I plan on the son of the dictator helping out the 'resistance'.

I'm super excited for it because I've got a lot of the world background planned out. Some story specifics I don't know yet (POV, exact plot points, etc) but I can't wait to get it figured out!

I've thought about writing about diclonius from Elfen Lied. My idea is to have the world think they are devils in disguise. Need to work on a bit though.

plot in my head. I have a lot of scattered scenes and some vague notion of the villain. The villain(s) really need to be strong for this and it's just not there yet. That doesn't bother me all that much. once I get going, I think that part would gel. Two, and here's the real problem, I'm busy like I haven't been busy since I had my own medical practice. I'm up to my eyeballs in research and paper and all sorts of other crap. I have NOT had time to properly research this. I don't know the 1930's as well as other time periods and honestly, it has proven far more difficult to research Pittsburgh at that time period than anticipated. I know myself. I can spend hours looking up the tiniest detail. I've already done it. I spent the better part of the afternoon looking up music and radio shows to find ones Temple would look at and the type of movies Caleb would see. This would be a bad habit in Nano.

2. Modern Day Urban Fantasy - This is also set in Pittsburgh and deals with demon hunters but a totally different universe from Caleb, Temple and Agni. It would deal with college seniors at an academy that trains demon hunters. One of the characters is half demon. I think it would be very easy to do. One of the characters is from Wales (where I spent my summer research). On the down side, Angels and Demons are getting done a lot (yeah as if vampires are original).

3. High Fantasy - Reko is a mage set to protect the princess and Nine is an ex-slave street whore who manages to come to their aid in an attack changing the course of his life forever. This one could be interesting to do, a bit plot heavy with the Machiavellian political intrigue (political intrigue is the least favorite thing for me but it would be necessary for this). I know who the villain is but when/where/how he is exposed is up in the air for me and it would really change the story.

I've had a couple of ideas bouncing about in my head for quite some time now and I have started a few but the one that I am planning to do for NaNo (which i completely forgot about until I got an email telling me it was soon =S) is one that I had started and then threw away, always with the intention of goung back to it.
Its about two people who run away together and about how that affects them both and their lives when they get where they're going. (I swear its better than I make it sound)
Good luck with yours though. All your ideas sound good! I just hope you can pick one in time. ^-^

I came up with my idea in September. :) I'm writing a fictionalized version of my last two relationships set in the Victorian era. This year will probably be a stretch for time (I'm not really sure about my workload during November, to be honest though!), so I wanted to write something fun and not serious.
