Congratulations NaNoWriMo 2011!

At last, this crazy marathon writing experience has come to its final chapter. Was your mission accomplished? Did you scribble your 50,000th word at 11:59 p.m. last night?

Even if you didn't quite finish- be proud- you have exhibited a feat of willpower and creativity that few people will ever experience. (And don't forget, you'll always have another chance next year.)

As a big thank you to all our writers, we want to invite all our community members to participate in the epilogue to NaNoWriMo 2011: "A Novel Competition".

When: December 1st through December 8th.

Where: The comments section of this post

What to do: Submit a brief plot summary or “book jacket copy” about their novel, maximum 250 words, in this contest entry's comments.

Who wins: LJ Editors will select the top five finalists from the entries. Guest judge Mark Coker (you may remember Mark from his recent LJ interview) from Smashwords will choose one grand prize winner from the finalist pool.

Prizes:

1 Grand Prize winner
Amazon Kindle
Blurb.com $20 gift certificate

4 Finalists prizes
Blurb.com $20 gift certificate

(Blurb.com is a website where authors can publish hardcover or paper copies of their books.)

For some, the anticipation of this contest might feel like Waiting for Godot. For others, these words could be no more than "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" but a chance to win some prizes. Either way, we look forward to reading your submissions! Good luck, writers!

Dancing Between The Beats (NaNo novel, 2011)
It seems that dance studio owner, Elizabeth Carrington, has forgotten that she is not the sole proprietor of Desert Dancesport, a ballroom dance studio. Her ever-increasing creative bookkeeping, to conceal her culling of studio monies, cannot continue to go unnoticed. Appearances can be everything and, for Elizabeth, preserving her looks has become an expensive obsession. Her silent business partner, senior dance instructor Marcos, is too distracted by the stunning new-hire Paige, to focus on the financials. The young dancer has her own agenda and is harboring a shocking secret. Paige, a disarming combination of naive and cynical, is upsetting more than one apple cart. Tony, also smitten, neglects his commitment to his ambitious and fiery dance partner, Sylvie. They should be preparing for a career-changing competition but instead of burning up the floor with Tony, Sylvie is smoking with resentment against Paige.

An engaged couple, learning a partnership dance routine for their wedding reception, discover how dance lessons can reveal hidden character traits. Jill, the pink-cowboy-boot-wearing receptionist can’t keep herself on track long enough to prevent those around her from derailing. The adult students, who are the glue that hold the studio together, offer perspective, insight, and philosophical commentary against the backdrop of the dramas unfolding in the ballroom studio.

Life never goes smoothly. Many ballroom dancers rush the patterns of the smooth dances because they are trying to dance 'on the beat'. Dance, like life, is what happens between the beats.

Title: Minotaur

Summary: Before her death, Dael the Royal Architect once oversaw the whole well-being of the tower of Minos, the city of the Gods. Her daughter Ikki has resolved to do the same in her place. When Ikki discovers a breach in the dome that keeps the city safe from the poisonous world outside, she thinks building a flying machine to investigate is just the natural thing to do.

Ikki thought she'd do a service to the city. Instead, she flies above the artificial sun, crashes her ship, and is brought before King Minos on charges of treason and crimes against the Gods. Her sentence? Exile to the Labyrinth deep beneath the city, where her survival against the dangers there will be proof of her innocence.

Ikki wants nothing more than to return to the surface and tell the world what she saw beyond the city walls, but no one has ever been known to escape the great maze. Her only hope? The Labyrinth's keeper himself: the dreaded beast known as the Minotaur.

The Snow Moon (Book Two of the Palatine Series)
Welcome to Palatine, California with a population of 500. This picturesque little town is hidden by the mammoth sequoias what cloak the rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range. There is little crime or pollution in Palatine. It is the kind of town where people leave their doors unlocked and everybody knows your name. It is also the home of the Luperci: an ancient, Etruscan cult whose initiates are granted, among other things, the power to shift into wolves.

Things are not perfect in Palatine. Somewhere within the dark shadows of the trees lurk the Malformed; hideous abominations stuck in bodies that failed to complete the shift between forms. These tortured souls prey upon the Luperci, as well as their human kin. As if that were not enough, an ancient and long forgotten evil has been watching and waiting for her time to rise again. That time has come.

Lilian Reis has been living in Palatine for just over a month with her autistic and developmentally disabled brother Randy. She has just begun to settle comfortably into her life there; even adapting to her brother’s new role as Lupis or spiritual leader of the Luperci.

But one morning a strange messenger appears on her doorstep with a warning. On that same day, Lily’s best friend goes missing. Soon Lily realizes that it falls on her already overburdened shoulders to save Palatine and remind its pack of their old traditions before it’s too late.

Meeting Gods, Entangling Bonds

Cyrus learns that he, stuttering Cyrus, has magical powers and that Sarkan is one of the ancient Trickster gods. Misfortunate Fate
Most days, all Justin wants to do is get through each day, maybe educate a few kids who didn’t want to be in class any more than he wanted to teach them, and work up the courage to ask the new teacher at work out on a date. What he certainly didn’t want is to suddenly start astral projecting himself all over the city, usually at the most inconvenient times to the most random places. One thing seems constant though, and that’s the presence of a mysterious woman, one who he seems to be incorporeally stalking and who seems to have nothing but scorn for him.

However, it is she who helps him to realize his astral projections aren’t so random after all and that his birth was one that many have waited and have feared for ages. Suddenly gifted with immense magical power, Justin finds himself in the middle of an age old power struggle with his life and his existence hanging in the very balance. As he tries and figures out who he is and his supposed great destiny, he must also try and stay alive at the same time. That's how Justin realizes being the real life, adult version of Harry Potter isn’t as easy or as much fun as one would think.

His Womanly Ways
Alex is a womanizer. He makes no excuses for it. Yes, he picks up women at the local bar, leaving them with just a memory of a good night and a good lay, but he hasn't had any complaints yet. That is, until he picks up the wrong woman. Not satisfied to be tossed aside as just another notch in Alex's bedpost, she curses him, wishing he "knew what it was like for a woman." And he's about to find out what she means, embarking on a genderswap journey that he can't stop.

Alex starts slowly gaining secondary female characteristics. Waking up with his cock gone, replaced by a vagina, was bad enough. Then it gets worse, as his body becomes more like a woman than the man he used to be. Alex tries to hide the changes he's going through, for fear that someone will discover his secret, but keeping this quite literally "under wraps" might be impossible before the curse runs its course.

With the help of his female best friend, Eve, Alex tries to deal with who he is becoming, while failing to find the woman who set him down this path. He feels like he's lost his identity, his mind not matching the body he now has. But Eve sticks by him, and they become closer as Alex's changes progress. And what started out as friendship may become something more before Alex's journey is over. Perhaps this curse was actually a blessing in disguise.

Voluntary Nightmare

A decade ago, Ethon, the fire mage, fought in a war he didn’t agree with, but ended up a hero.

A decade ago, Savaria Archana was one of the Living Goddesses who put an end to the war.

A decade ago, Sverre was a nine-year-old boy holding guns for Yaarian soldiers when he encountered Ethon Drake, and came away severely burned.

A decade ago, Charis joined the military, believing royalty like herself should give to the country.

Now fearing that the reasons for the ethnic cleansing were fabricated by a mad king, Ethon knows he’s the king’s next target. Savaria Archana, ripped from the rarified halls of her temple in an attempt to kidnap all the Goddesses, has escaped her kidnappers, and is ready to fight to keep herself and the other Goddesses safe. Minus his arm and extensively scarred, Sverre finds himself partnering with Ethon to protect Archana and prevent another war, a war Charis must find a way to stop before her father and brother destroy the country.

Together these companions have to outmaneuver the king’s superior forces, and bring peace and reconciliation to a deeply troubled land.

By Blood and Pyrelight
In the wake of the third world war, England is a country shattered. Superstition grows in isolated settlements, fuelled by the fear of radiation and land mines, and as people turn more and more to ritual and luck, the power of long-depleted magic swells.

Imani and her daughter Nia, sheltered in one of the few big cities where society survives by ignoring its severed extremities, start to see strange things in the street, magical things that shouldn't exist anywhere. Drawn in to a spectral second world, where the elves have given up hope and time warps with their misery, their own lives start to slip away.

Nyxrinaar, the one conscious human changeling in all of Faerie, has almost grown apathetic to her lonely existence amongst backstabbing fey. But the faerie queen Aelystriel has little interest in allowing things to settle. A tournament is announced, and its participants are all human. Against all reason, Nyx cannot ignore the sudden surge of hope. This is her one chance to reunite with others like her, break free of Faerie and liberate her parents from the fey child they have been unknowingly raising in her stead. For that, she is more than willing to risk her life.

Miriah Ellison, unpaid servant and secretary to her village's self-appointed governor, her mother, indulges in such heroism only through daydream, spending her few free hours lost in fantasy, practising the art of slipping through crowds unnoticed. The theft of a book from a man whose features shift and squirm in her memory, impossible to pin down, brings to light a new and intriguing possibility: that she has the power to manipulate human minds. But things move far too quickly out in the isolated countryside. Magic starts to make its mark on people's very bodies. A new faction of humanity is soon to rise: the undead Graven.

SONG OF THE SEA

"From the top of the lighthouse Myf felt that she could see to the edge of the world."

A young woman suffers the loss of the only man she has ever loved and journeys into the mysterious afterlife beneath the ocean in order to save him. Once there she realises that all the stories she was told growing up about the peacefulness of what awaits those who die beyond the waves are fabrications and that it is a hostile, dangerous place, full of monsters and spectres. There are the Angers, terrible men who burn to the touch with their rage, and there are the spirit trees who can rip a man in two with their ghostly branches made of pale hair. These are just the beginning of her trials. Myfanwy must navigate a world she does not understand with little but her wits, those few she forms bonds with along the way, and the love she holds for her departed fiancé, Cainan. Along the way she passes through grief as tangible as anything in the real world and ghosts as alive with passion and intelligence as anyone in the realm of the living, and she finally may come to the realisation that perhaps not everyone could, or should, be saved.
